CONVENT LIFE OF A CAMELITE NUN Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

CONVENT LIFE OF A CAMELITE NUN - Essay Example Her new novice’s veil seemed to have its own source of light and it radiated above her feet, catching the rays of the moon from the small, high window. This reminded Jessie of the momentous decision which had brought her here to begin a new life of prayer and seclusion. Thinking of the greatness of God and the exciting prospect of joining this community of nuns, Jessie eventually fell asleep. There was a faint ringing in the distance, and Jessie dreamed of the convent garden, where she would pray with the other novices. The sun would shine and she would sing with the nuns, happy at last to be a part of their community. How sweet the bell sounded, and how glorious it was to have a calling to be a Carmelite nun! There would be endless days of sunshine and singing, and Jessie would look serene and contented in her distinctive habit and veil, happy at last to have found her true vocation. A rough hand shook Jessie’s shoulder and she opened her eyes to see an older woman shaking her fist and looking very cross. In total silence the nun pulled Jessie from the bed and dragged her down the corridor to the washroom. In less than three minutes she was stripped of her nightgown and bundled into the uniform of the novitiate – a full-length brown habit and the white novice’s veil. â€Å"Wait, wait, I have to adjust my clothes† she cried, searching in vain for a mirror, but the nun placed one finger on Jessie’s lips and pushed her unceremoniously through the door. The chapel was filled with nuns. Jessie slunk in to a pew at the back, and tried to look inconspicuous. An hour of silent prayer was followed by an hour of psalms and readings and then a formal Mass. The overriding sensation that Jessie felt was tiredness, although boredom and hunger also troubled her during these lengthy rituals. Everyone else seemed to know exactly what to do. When to sit, or to stand, and how to respond to the Divine Office. At last, the nuns filed

Compare and contrast the values, institutions and actions of the Essay

Compare and contrast the values, institutions and actions of the city-states of Sparta and Athens - Essay Example Athenian citizens had enjoyed strong constitutional rights in political and legal aspects. This made them strong, materially and psychologically, which was envied by many non-citizens and these aspects were not compromised upon for anything else. At the Funeral Oration of Pericles, it was declared that the Greek Constitution was unique in its laws and is an example for others. It is meant for all people of the State and hence is democracy. The laws provide equal justice to all in their private differences; no form of discrimination is allowed based on social status or race and creed and not even by economic status. Any citizen serving the State will not be hindered by the obscurity of his position. This freedom extends from government to ordinary life (Butler, K; 18). Political organizations in Athens and the surrounding cities differed in specific instance conflict, as well as cooperation among groups. Athens was always in a better position than other States and tend to dictate to t he smaller states with which it was in league. Failure to meet Athenian expectations, whether reasonable or unreasonable, sometimes resulted in harsh treatment and other sorts of vindications announced. The impact of Greek concepts spread extensively through the Roman jurisprudence and philosophy, particularly the idea of ‘rights’ that the Greek government had announced. On the other side, Sparta was also admired by the Ancient World for different reasons. It was a military prowess and had a stable political system. Military, in Sparta, was different in that it was strengthened to cause repression of the majority of the internal population instead of defense against external aggression. This is treated as an early example of the conscious creation of state institutions for massive, ongoing repression of the kind Hobbes’ absolutist governor would have to have. Contrast to the Athenian ideology,

GRP Systems Ltd. (GSL) - Supply Chain Management Essay

GRP Systems Ltd. (GSL) - Supply Chain Management - Essay Example This also helps it retain its competitive advantage in the future. Table of Contents About GSL Competitive analysis- SWOT analysis GSL’s competitive advantage and SCM Stakeholder analysis- BCG Matrix Conclusions and recommendations References GRP SYSTEMS LTD. – SUPPLY CHAIN ANALYSIS This report analyzes GRP Systems Ltd. (GSL) market in terms of its competitiveness to assess its ability to cater to a high-end market for 500-1500 pe in the sewage water treatment niche. This analysis is important for GSL’s sustenance in the present market conditions where its core business of catering to 50-500 p.e. (population equivalent) market is soon becoming obsolete with 500-1500 p.e. market gaining importance in the region. The company’s strengths and weaknesses and its supply chain management will be analyzed for this purpose. About GSL GRP Systems Ltd. (GSL) is a South Coast, England based manufacturing company that has grown from providing repair and maintenance ope rations to sailing yachts to suppliers of septic tanks for small properties which are not yet connected to the main sewage system. Over the last 6 years, GSL has become a key player in the ‘package’ sewage treatment services which they identified as a niche market. It provides services to water treatment plants, pubs and hotels among others. It serves its niche market with a 50-500 p.e. with its small ‘package’ sewage treatment solution and has a 25% market share in England and Wales. The solution includes sinking a tank into holes dug in the ground and filling the tank with structured media in which bacteria are allowed to grow that feed off the sewage to neutralize water. Competitive analysis- SWOT analysis Strengths- GSL has a 25% market share in England and Wales for its small ‘package’ sewage treatment solution that offers low cost treatment of water. This segment of the market has few players and the company has a strong hold since 6 year s with potential to expand to the 500-1500 p.e. segment. Its speed of service is its major strength which the company is yet to leverage on to gain a higher market share. Its pricing is also a key strength as it offers cost-saving tanks that can be buried underground unlike the costly steel tanks that are installed above ground which is mostly disapproved. GSL’s technical expertise is also considered on par with the required standards although the tanks are not as robust as the steel tanks. Weaknesses- GSL is short of leveraging its core competencies in expanding its market to the higher-end niche of catering to 500-1500 p.e.. It is also short of manpower as it uses limited manpower who are experts in their respective fields. High lead times for sale and delivery of the services along with low profitability (5%) and high overheads (20%) is a constraint on the company’s business. Procurement of inventory for the tanks along with high cost of labour is another factor res tricting GSL’s growth. Opportunities- GSL can leverage its core competencies in terms of low cost ‘package’ sewage treatment solutions to expand its business to cater to the higher end market of 500-1500 p.e.. GSL can also try to devise effective strategies to address the need to cater to custom design solutions through its expertise that it can leverage along with its effective delivery. The company can also train its staff to meet the

Gun Control and Second Amendment Research Paper

Gun Control and Second Amendment - Research Paper Example Instead, the paper shall give a brief history of the origins of this debate then it shall look at the extremely confusing word use on the preamble in the Second Amendment where it will highlight the strong argument points for both sides: pro-gun control and anti-gun control. However, this does not mean that the paper has taken a neutral stance because after all fact have been laid bare the main purpose of this paper is to explain why having guns in the hand of the civilian population, as good intentioned as it may be, provides a real source of danger especially to the American adolescent population at home and at school. The debate on whether or not Americans should privately own guns and the Second Amendment goes back several years though we could argue that it gained heat after the assassination of President J. F. Kennedy in 1963. After evidence from the assassination of President JFK the public became aware of the relative uncontrolled state of sale and possession of firearms in the United States. Below we provide a brief outline of possible key dates in this debate. In 1871, the National Rifle Association (NRA) is established in New York. The NRA remains as the strongest lobby group in the United States as it actively promotes the right for Americans to own firearms privately. It was founded as the American Rifle Association with the purpose of improving civilian marksmanship in preparation for war. In 1968, the Gun Control Act is enacted. This Act is used to regulate the sale of handguns, gun-dealer licensing and gun-importation. Indeed, before1968, guns were sold to any adult regardless of mental capacity or criminal record. In 1972, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is established. The ATF’s mission was to enforce the Federal firearms laws, to control the sale of firearms and to prevent illegal use of firearms. Today its mandate has expanded to include protecting American communities from arson, bombings and acts of

Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 12

Law - Essay Example Alain, while in the course of the act of helping Mrs Todd balance the shopping, owed a duty of care to the Plaintiff during the course of his employment. He approached the plaintiff to help her balance the shopping, and therefore was under the obligation of taking care while performing the act. However, he failed to take enough care and made the mistake of hanging the heavy shopping bags on the accelerator bar, which led to the scooter speeding off to disaster. Applying the test of remoteness to this case, we observe that Mrs. Todd was directly in the path of any act or omission of Alain. (1856) Alain did not act prudently and carefully while balancing the shopping bags. Any reasonable man would have known that hanging the bags on to the accelerator would amount to a disastrous accident, especially when Mrs Todd was still on the scooter. The case of first came out with the concept of duty of care. (1990, 1932) â€Å"There must be, and is, some general conception of relations giving rise to a duty of care, of which the particular cases found in the books are but instances. The rule that you are to love your neighbour becomes in law you must not injure your neighbour; and the lawyers question: Who is my neighbour? You must take reasonable care to avoid acts or omissions which you can reasonably foresee would be likely to injure your neighbour.  Who, then, in law, is my neighbour? The answer seems to be - persons who are so closely and directly affected by my act that I ought reasonably to have them in contemplation as being so affected when I am directing my mind to the acts or omissions that are called in question. A manufacturer of products, which he sells in such a form as to show that he intends them to reach the ultimate consumer in the form in which they left him with no reasonable possibility of intermediate examination, and with knowledge that the absence of reasonable care in th e preparation or putting up of products will result in an injury

Biblical Authority Article Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Biblical Authority - Article Example From this paper it is clear that Wright N.T delivering the lecture at The Laing Lecture 1989, and the Griffith Thomas Lecture 1989, had a goal of justifying that the bible is worth being authoritative and is indeed authoritative because the words of the bible are the words of God and God Himself and that God is perfect and all-knowing enough to give out instructions that would last and be valid till the end of days. Having explained all terminologies involved and visited views of opposing schools of thought, it is in place to say that the author developed his thesis logically. Indeed, the author’s major strength was for him to have attributed all his arguments to biblical relations and paying homage to other people on the other side of his position. This study highlights that the author really composed his thoughts and arguments well. For him to describe God as omniscient, knowing what is good for all humankind in years to come even before the actual time comes would really lea ve very little room for opposing critics. There however remain unanswered questions to me on how the writer justified most schools of thought. This leaves room for so much doubt if the author’s own stand was authoritative enough.  The writer writes a rather accommodating remark on the school of thought that the scripture was made for to address issues of specific times of the world’s existence and so may be justified not to be thought as an authoritative material for our day.
